Sue Thompson – Empowering Teens
Many young people today feel anxious, depressed or overwhelmed by life’s challenges. Having a neutral, supportive person to talk to—outside of family and friends—can make a world of difference. As a professional counsellor, I provide the guidance and support teens need to build resilience and thrive.
Specialising in working with teens, I create a safe, non-judgmental space where they can openly explore their feelings, concerns, and goals. Together, we develop personalised strategies to help them navigate life’s challenges with confidence. Through tailored sessions, we unlock their inner strengths and equip them with the tools they need to succeed personally and academically.
I also offer compassionate, non-judgmental support for parents and carers of teens. Depending on your needs, I can provide individual or combined sessions to strengthen family communication and connection.
Online and in-person sessions available now – no referral or mental health plan required.
Are you a concerned parent?
- Is your teen feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed by life’s challenges?
- Are relationships, self-image, or friendships causing them distress?
- Does your teen struggle with low confidence, self-worth or school refusal?
- Are addictive behaviours, obsessive thoughts, or self-harm a concern?
- Is your teen battling suicidal thoughts, sleep issues, or feeling out of control?
We can discuss your concerns and how I can best support your teen. After our initial session, I will follow up to outline tailored support plan options designed to meet your teen’s unique needs.
FAQs
How do you handle confidentiality and privacy in my counselling session?
Confidentiality and privacy underpin this practice. Everything discussed in a counselling session is kept strictly confidential, except in rare instances where there is a legal obligation to report, such as when there is a possible imminent risk of harm to oneself or others. I am committed to creating a safe space where clients can feel secure to share and explore their thoughts and feelings without judgement.
What is a parent’s involvement in Sue’s counselling sessions?
Where a parent has organised counselling support for their child, I offer a free 15 minute phone consult prior to the initial appointment. This is an opportunity for parents to reflect their concerns and reasons for seeking counselling for their child.
My intention is to empower teens. Therefore, the focus is on individual sessions where teens can speak with the freedom of knowing that information will be kept confidential. However, a teen can choose to give their consent for information to be shared with a parent/carer.
Where parents are seeking support for themselves and are unsure about how to manage situations in their teenager’s life, I offer parent/carer guidance sessions.
Can I access a Medicare rebate when seeing a counsellor?
You are able to book an appointment at Strength2Shine immediately, and are not required to obtain a GP referral. However, Strength2Shine is unable to accept Mental Health Care Plans and therefore cannot provide a Medicare rebate at this stage.
How long do I need to see a therapist for?
The duration of therapy will depend on your individual needs and preferences, which you can discuss with your counsellor. Some young people may only need a few sessions to develop skills and gain direction, while others might benefit from long-term therapy and continuous support. This will be discussed during the first session and reviewed as needed. Unlike psychologists, psychotherapists (counsellors) often encourage long-term therapy when suitable, to foster a deep understanding of your concerns.
